Are you dealing with a zipper that won't zip properly or that won't stay closed once it's zipped? This can be frustrating for sure — but don't throw out a perfectly good item because of a faulty zipper. In this blog, we'll show you how to repair a zipper the simple, struggle-free way!

Does your zipper look like this? Not for long!

When a zipper isn't working correctly, the culprit is usually the zipper slider. This is the piece that moves up and down on the zipper chain, interlocking or separating the teeth. If you have a metal zipper slider that isn't locking the teeth together well (or at all) when you close the zipper, the first step is to try tightening the slider. All you need is a pair of smooth, flat-nose pliers! Learn how to tighten a metal zipper slider in the first video below.

If tightening the slider doesn't solve the problem, then it's time to replace it. We can help you with that too! Watch the videos in this blog to learn how to replace the slider on a separating zipper and a continuous zipper. These techniques will work for metal, molded tooth and coil chains, so you can make any old zipper work like new.

How to Replace a Separating Zipper Slider

This video will show you how to put a new slider on a separating zipper, such as a jacket zipper. You'll learn how to remove the faulty slider, install the new slider and make sure the zipper is stopped correctly. This is a quick, no-sew fix that anyone can do with just a handful of materials and tools. Watch this video to learn how.

Note: Always remove a top stop on a separating zipper to replace the slider. Never remove the starter box or pin on a separating zipper. Starter boxes and pins are not available for sale as replacement parts and cannot be added back onto a separating zipper once removed.

How to Replace a Continuous Zipper Slider

In this video, we demonstrate how to make a continuous zipper, such as the zipper on a bag or backpack, work like new with fresh sliders. You'll see how to access the end of the zipper, remove the old sliders and install the new sliders. You'll also have several options for stopping the chain to keep the sliders in place. Press play to see how.

We hope these easy zipper repairs helped you give a much-loved jacket, bag or other item a new lease on life. Be sure to check out our other Tips & Tricks blogs for instructions on replacing old snap fasteners, repairing broken seams, restoring fabric water resistance and more!
