What Is Waxed Canvas?
As a long-lasting alternative to leather, waxed canvas is a heavy-duty, dyed cotton fabric created using a plain weave. In the days before Dacron® and synthetic sail material, waxed canvas was originally used by sailors due to its incredible durability, water resistance and ability to catch the wind better than unwaxed canvas.
This product is coated in a paraffin wax, making it more cost effective, lighter and slightly more flexible compared to our heavy beeswax-coated canvas.
Because of its wax coating, this canvas will patina beautifully when it is folded, scratched or scuffed, creating a rich, rugged look. This means you will be able to see the marks made in the fabric as they will appear lighter than the original fabric color. This gives a more unique, craftsman-inspired look to many projects. Like a full grain leather, waxed canvas looks better with age and wear!
Special Attributes:
- Highly water resistant while remaining breathable.
- Naturally shows wear to create a unique patina.
- Will mold to the needed shape without stretching out.
- Can be re-treated again and again to keep it functioning like new.
- Does not stain easily.
- A lasting alternative to leather.
- No right or wrong side.
