How to Make a Square Frame Awning with Tie Down Bar

X-HT-200393

This video provides step-by-step instructions for making a square frame awning with a tie bar. The awning featured in this video attaches to a wall via an EMT pipe at the head of the canopy inserted into a Rod and Rafter Holder. The square frame is built using galvanized pipe and awning hardware. The canopy features a beautiful, scalloped edge and a strip of grommets that attach the fabric to the frame by being laced over the tie down bar, allowing the canopy to be pulled taught.

Tips for Scalloped Edging

To achieve the scalloped edging, we used soft braid binding. Acrylic bias binding will not take curves well, so we recommend soft braid binding for scalloped edges. We also recommend sewing the binding using a zigzag stitch. Using zigzag stitch increases the likelihood of your needle making contact with the fabric inside the binding, ensuring a firm hold and a well-sewn binding. Scalloped awnings and the corners of dodgers and biminis are easier to bind using zigzag stitch.
