Product Details

This chrome tanned leather split is an economical single bend of quality cowhide leather. Single bends are sections of leather from under the shoulder. This 3-4 oz. leather has a medium temper that will give your projects enough rigidity to maintain shape without being too stiff. Chrome tanned leather cannot be stamped or tooled.

The polyurethane coating on the top side adds extra water resistance. The coating replaces the top grain of the leather and is embossed with a pebble grain and satin finish. This predyed single bend of leather features an even coloring and is dyed throughout. The back side has a smooth feel and tight grain.

Chrome tan is a popular choice for garments, gloves, bags and upholstery. It is more water resistant and less prone to marring and scratches than vegetable tanned leather. Chrome tan leather requires less maintenance than veg tan, and it also boasts a superior tensile strength.

A single bend of cowhide is approximately 10 sq. ft.

Please Note: This leather side is a bulk list item. You will receive a cowhide similar to the one shown but not necessarily that particular hide.

Country of Origin: Italy

What Is Chrome Tanned Leather?

Chrome tanned leather is the most common tanning process. Chrome tanned leathers use chemical compounds such as chromium that speed up the tanning process, which allows the leather to be tanned in just days. Because of the faster production time, chrome tanned leather is often less expensive than vegetable tanned leather. Chrome tan leather is also typically softer and thinner than veg tan. There is a wide variety of colors to choose from, making chrome tan a popular choice for upholstery and clothing.

Leather Patina

Chrome tanned leather will patina but not as significantly as vegetable tanned leather. With use and time, chrome tanned leather will develop a shine that adds character to the finished item. The color may also slightly darken over a long period of time, but not to a significant degree.
