Sailrite® PTFE Lifetime Thread (formerly Profilen®) is a high-performance polymer PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene) thread that is totally unaffected by sunlight (UV) or nature's harsh elements and comes with a lifetime manufacturer's warranty. While sewing thread generally represents a very small investment in a total project, the weakest part of any canvas project is typically the thread, which eventually rots or weakens to the point of breakage. UV light, as well as elemental factors, attack the thread and tremendously reduces its tenacity over time.
Sailrite PTFE Lifetime Thread has a permanent 100% UV and weather resistance, as well as a "lotus-effect" dirt and water repellency, meaning it has self-cleaning properties due to its high water repellency. The unique characteristics of this PTFE thread mean that it will neither rot nor degrade. Being resistant to salt, microorganisms, bird droppings and most chemicals makes this thread a great choice for canvaswork, awnings, patio umbrellas and so much more. This thread can be used with both oscillating and rotary hook sewing machines. The thread performs very well in rotary hook machines like the Fabricator® Sewing Machine. Please read the section below titled "Important Information Regarding Sewing PTFE Thread" for information regarding oscillating hook machines. Not sure if your sewing machine has an oscillating hook? Learn more in our Rotary vs. Oscillating Hook Sewing Machines blog (#300118XHT).
Extremely resilient and flexible, even in low temperatures, Sailrite PTFE Lifetime Thread has an extremely low coefficient of friction making it highly resistant to abrasion. Although more expensive, this 1500 denier thread is a "Value Added" product — it costs more than other outdoor threads, but not when the costs of lifespan and re-stitching are considered. The manufacturer gives a lifetime guarantee that it will replace any Sailrite PTFE Lifetime Thread which fails in usage due to degradation caused by exposure to sunlight or by degradation caused by atmospheric chemical (pollution) attack.
The base of the cone has a specially designed locking snap closure system to catch and keep the end of the thread contained for easier storage. Simply pull the base open, wrap the thread around the open trench leaving a tail, then push the base bottom to snap the locking system over the thread.
Sailrite Lifetime Thread is similar in size to Tex 92. We recommend using needle size #14 Round Point (Sharp) needle for mesh fabrics such as Phifertex Plus or shade sail material, and a size #18 DI Leather needle for dense fabrics like Marine Canvas and Awning fabrics and sailcloth. Outdoor thread should pull up off the top of the cone for a smoother feed to the sewing machine.
Important Information Regarding Sewing PTFE Thread:
PTFE thread can be somewhat tricky to sew on any oscillating hook sewing machine. However, we have tested numerous lifetime threads on the market and found that Sailrite PTFE Lifetime Thread performs better than other lifetime threads on the Ultrafeed® Sewing Machine. There is a trial and error process with using this thread. PTFE thread will not perform like polyester and it should not be expected to do so.
You will more than likely experience some skipped stitches when sewing PTFE thread. This is to be expected; its slippery texture kinks, resulting in occasional skipped stitches. Skipped stitches do not compromise the quality or integrity of your sewing assembly. There are no structural concerns with skipped stitches in your seams. Please refer to the video at the bottom of this page for a demonstration of sewing with Sailrite PTFE Lifetime Thread.
