DIY Boat Helm Seat 2

The first step of any boat seat upholstery project is to remove the old fabric and evaluate your foam. Sometimes the foam can be reused, and if yours is in good shape and has not bottomed out you can do so. If you need to replace your foam, we recommend CushionRite® seating foam. This line of high-quality upholstery foam comes in several sheet sizes, thicknesses and firmness ratings. We recommend CushionRite® Standard Antimicrobial Foam for boat upholstery, and it's available in several firmnesses for your personal comfort and support needs.

A helm seat has a lot of curve and shape to it, but there's no need to be intimidated. Our detailed video tutorial walks you through every step of the DIY process — from patterning and cutting to sewing and assembly. We don't leave anything out. Even if you're new to sewing you'll be able to follow along and upholster your own boat helm seat. You'll be truly amazed at what you can do with Sailrite supplies and how-to content.
